The green vision becomes reality

The processing of the first coil of SALCOS® steel was a real success.
Not only in terms of the outcome – HFI-welded steel pipes – but also
as a key step towards a carbon-neutral circular economy.

The raw material was produced in Peine in an electric arc furnace from 100% scrap using renewable energy. Carbon emissions were only 0.33 tonnes per tonne of electric steel produced, compared to 2.13 tonnes for a conventional blast furnace route (based on ISO 17029 and TÜV SÜD VERIsteel standard).
Salzgitter Flachstahl rolled this into 11 mm thick hot-rolled strip, which was HFI-welded in Siegen into 18 m long steel pipes with a diameter of 323.9 mm.

SALCOS®  premiere in Siegen
The contract for the first carbon-reduced steel pipes was secured
by network operator Gasunie.
Eric Habing, Senior Purchase & Contract Manager, travelled especially to Siegen to personally take possession of the carbon-reduced coil from Salzgitter. He was welcomed by Regional Sales Manager Monika Langenbach and Managing Director Andreas Betzler. He naturally took the opportunity to find out on site about the HFI production process, including the extensive quality checks and subsequent 3-layer PE coating.

Gasunie – Dutch-German grid operator
As the operator of the most important natural gas transmission network in the Netherlands and part of Germany, Gasunie plays a key role in the energy transition. In the coming years, the company will invest heavily in infrastructure for the transmission and storage of hydrogen, CO2, heat and green gas.

Framework agreements for efficient and punctual materials procurement
To implement the projects, Gasunie Netherlands and Gasunie Germany completed a joint tendering process at the end of 2025 and signed framework agreements for the production and supply of strategic pipeline materials. The contracts were awarded on the basis of the best price-performance ratio, with an additional requirement to supply materials with a low carbon footprint. Mannesmann Line Pipe was one of six suppliers to qualify in the Europe-wide tender.

Positive outlook for the future
"With carbon-reduced steel pipes, we are taking another step towards our goal of climate-neutral business operations by 2045," said Eric Habing during his visit to Siegen. "From steel production via coils through to finished steel pipes, we are taking a big step closer to our vision of a carbon-reduced circular economy."
Produced from SALCOS® coil, the carbon-reduced steel pipes can also be used to transport green hydrogen and will soon play their part in one of the next projects.

The SALCOS® product pledge

Salzgitter AG's SALCOS® sets standards for high-quality products made from carbon-reduced steel. These are produced in the electric arc furnace route at Peiner Träger from 100% recycled scrap using green electricity.

SALCOS®

  • has the same outstanding material properties as conventional steel grades
  • is physically carbon-reduced and transparently certified
  • contributes significantly to the reduction of Scope 3 emissions
  • lays the foundation for sustainability certification in accordance with the EEG (German Renewable Energy Act) as well as for a successful environmental impact assessment (EIA) and life cycle analysis (LCA)
