"Bespoke is our standard."
The product range and possible applications of HFI-welded steel pipes are extremely diverse. The technical requirements for grades, manufacturing tolerances and coatings of the material used are as varied as each individual project.
“Although the requirements for materials and design for various applications are defined by comprehensive standards, there are always individual customer requests that go beyond these,” says Christoph Weil, Head of Product Management and R&D at Mannesmann Line Pipe. These include, for example, the specifications for internal and external coatings, some of which are stipulated by international corporations or large energy suppliers. In addition, there are also specific requirements regarding such mechanical and technological properties as toughness and strength, as well as pipe geometry.
'Tandems' help to optimise project management
“Thanks to the global application of our products in a wide variety of areas, we have implemented over 370 different customer specifications in the last three years alone,” says Weil. To best respond to enquiries, ‘tandems’ ensure smooth project management. The responsible sales staff bring in a product manager right at the enquiry stage and also advise customers on technical matters. The teams usually also work alongside a tandem on the customer side, consisting of purchasers and engineers.
Quality planning and digital twins
Once an enquiry becomes more specific, the consultation initially results in a manufacturability check and then detailed production planning. The quality planning process plays a central role in meeting customer requirements. For each customer order item, a digital twin with all technical details is created in the ERP system. This data set forms the basis for production and quality planning and its implementation.
Maximal customer benefit
Mannesmann Line Pipe customers benefit not only from the company's high level of technical expertise and manufacturing competence, but also from its excellent long-term relationships with suppliers in the raw materials sector, says Weil: “Thanks to our well-established processes, we can manufacture even small, technically demanding batches to bespoke customer specifications and on time.”

New innovative applications
Proximity to customers and partners plays an important role in the development of new products: information gathered at customer events, trade fairs, symposia and technical committees is channelled straight into the work of the Research & Development (R&D) department. This has recently culminated in the development of numerous innovative products tailored to customer needs and brought to market maturity.
Mannesmann H2ready®
- Mannesmann H2ready® steel pipes deliver maximum flexibility and safety for the transport and storage of gaseous hydrogen or hydrogen-natural gas mixtures.
Mannesmann CO2ready®
- According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the transport and storage of CO2 will play an important role in achieving the internationally agreed climate protection targets.
Mannesmann made for cryogenic media
- Pipes made from highly sophisticated bainitic steel are available for transporting gaseous and liquefied media at ultra-low temperatures of down to -196 °C.
Mannesmann Premium Line Pipe
- In addition to the tightest manufacturing tolerances (in terms of length, roundness, diameter, straightness and wall thickness), availability in small quantities is also a key feature of our premium pipes, which meet all European technical requirements.
Mannesmann for water-oil-mix
- Cement mortar-lined steel pipes with push-in socket connections ensure trouble-free operation when transporting corrosive oil/water mixtures.
Mannesmann NH3ready
- Our NH3ready steel pipes ensure both the efficient transport and safe storage of ammonia.
Cable conduits
- Product variants with push-in welded sockets, weld bevels or ZSM joints offer heavy-duty and durable solutions for underground pipes.
Customisation in demand here too
For Christoph Weil technical customer specifications are also the focus for these areas of application: "Almost every enquiry and every project is unique in its own way – we regard bespoke as our standard."
